Simon James Greenall[1] (born 3 January 1958) is an English actor, presenter and voice artist. Among his television appearances are as the Caretaker onTrapped!,[2] Richard inLucy Sullivan is Getting Married,[3] and asMichael theGeordie in theAlan Partridge programs and films.[2][4] He also voices Captain Barnacles in theOctonauts franchise, the twins in theShaun the Sheep films, andAleksandr Orlov and Sergei themeerkats in thecomparethemarket.com adverts.[2][5]

Early life

Greenall was born on 3 January 1958 inLongtown,Cumberland.[6][7] He attended theManchester School of Theatre at the same time asSteve Coogan, who was two years below him and would later become a repeat collaborator.[8]

Career

Greenall has appeared in a number of television shows, shorts, movies, and video games. Earlier roles include as policemen inLife Without George (1987),One Foot in the Grave (1990),[2][6] andBetween the Lines (1993);[3] as various characters inAlexei Sayle's Merry-Go-Round (1998),[6]Pond Life (2000),[citation needed] andMonkey Dust (2003);[6] and as the voices of Mr. Bump, Mr. Grumpy, and Mr. Happy inThe Mr. Men Show (2008). He voiced Murgo in theFable video game franchise and replacedCam Clarke inFinal Fantasy XIV as the voice of Lord Lolorito, in addition to his regular voiceover role the dragon Nidhogg.[citation needed] In the 2006Doctor Who episode "Love & Monsters", he played Mr. Skinner.[2]

Greenall has also starred on theBBC Radio showsOn the Blog,Missing Hancocks, andThe Simon Day Show.[6] He wonCelebrity Mastermind in 2015 with the specialist subjectD-Day landings[citation needed] and was credited as co-executive producer of the 2011 film adaptation ofWe Need to Talk About Kevin.[9] He currently voicesAleksandr Orlov themeerkat in thecomparethemarket.com adverts.[10]

WhenGrant Bovey was training for a BBC charity boxing match againstRicky Gervais, Greenall was one of Bovey's sparring partners.[citation needed] In 1995, he won aWriters' Guild of Great Britain Awards honour in the TV - Light Entertainment category along withHarry Enfield,Geoffrey Perkins,Harry Thompson,Paul Whitehouse,Ian Hislop,Nick Newman andKay Stonham forHarry Enfield's Television Programme.[11] In 2014, he was awarded an honorary fellowship from theUniversity of Cumbria.[7]
