TheSimhachala Hill Range, with theanglicised nameSimhachalam Hills, are a towering mountain range (377 m) in the city ofVisakhapatnam, inAndhra Pradesh state, southernIndia. It is one of the hill ranges inAndhra Pradesh and in theEastern Ghats.[1]
The Simhachalam Hills form part of the eastern ranges of theEastern Ghats system. These hills cover an area of 32 km.[2]
The Simhachalm Hill Range has a lot of rich history. The famousVaraha Lakshmi Narasimha temple is located here. TheChalukya period Radha Madhava Swamy temple and some oldBuddhist monuments are also found here.[3]
The hills house many temples including theVaraha Lakshmi Narasimha temple and other smaller ones; every year a festival is held called theGiri Pradakshina, whereHindu devotees walk 35 km around the hill.[4]
The neighborhoods ofVisakhapatnam city situated near the hill range areAdavivaram,Akkayyapalem,Balayya Sastri Layout,Gopalapatnam,Hanumanthavaka,Kailasapuram,Madhavadhara,Narasimha Nagar,Prahaladapuram, andSeethammadhara.
Simhachalam Hills protectedVisakhapatnam city environmental hazards[clarification needed] andAndhra University has found 74 varieties of flora and 200 species.[5]
There is a popular trail leading to the Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple atop Simhachalam Hill. The trek begins nearHanumanthavaka junction and the route offers panoramic views of the city and the Eastern Ghats.[6]
