TheSimav (Turkish:Simav Çayı) orSusurluk River[1] (Susurluk Çayı) is ariver inAnatolianTurkey. Its course is 321 km long[1] and its basin comprises 22,400 km2. It was the classicalMacestus[2][3] (/məˈsɛstəs/;Greek:Μέκεστος,Mékestos[4]). In the 19th century, it was known as theMikalick.[3]
The Simav has its source inKütahya Province, from which it flows north across the plain ofSimav intoBalıkesir Province. There is a reservoir at theÇaygören Dam,[5] out of which the Simav flows pastSusurluk and meets theAdirnaz. During the classical period, the Macestus was a tributary of theRhyndacus (the modern Adirnaz), but today the Simav forms the main course from their confluence nearKaracabey down to theSea of Marmara. Along the way, it meets theNilüfer River (the classicalOdrysses).
Its mouth faces the island ofImrali, a high-security prison.
