Simalungun Regency is a regency inNorth Sumatra Province ofIndonesia. Its seat was formerly atPematangsiantar, but this city was under Law No.15 of 10 March 1986 was separated from the Regency and made into an independent city (kota), although it remains geographically surrounded by the regency, whose new administrative seat is atRaya, while the regency's two most populous districts are Bandar and Siantar. The regency now covers an area of 4,372.5 square kilometres, and at the 2010 census it had a population of 817,720;[2] at the 2020 Census this had risen to 990,246, of whom 497,314 were males and 492,932 were females;[3] the official estimate as at mid 2024 was 1,051,845, and is projected to rise to 1,067,499 at mid 2025 - comprising 537,650 males and 529,849 females.[1]
The principal group of inhabitants of the Regency (and ofPematangsiantar city, an enclave within the regency) are theSimalungun people, a sub-group of theBatak people. Their language (Simalungun language) is anAustronesian language.
The regent ofSimalungun is Radiapoh Hasiholan Sinaga, SH, who was elected as Regent of Simalungun onPilkada (election of regional head) 2020, and took office on 21 April 2021.
The regency in 2010 was divided administratively into thirty-onedistricts (kecamatan), but in 2017 a 32nd district -Dolog Masagal - was created. These are tabulated below with their areas and their populations at the 2010 Census[2] and 2020 Census,[3] together with the official estimates as at mid 2024.[1] The table also includes the locations of the district administrative centres, the number ofadministrative villages in each district (totaling 386 ruraldesa and 27 urbankelurahan), and its post code.

Six southern districts border directly on the north coast ofLake Toba; from west to east, these are Pematang Silimakuta, Silimakuta, Haranggaol Horison, Dolok Pardamean, Pematang Sidamanik, and Girsang Sipangan Bolon.
Dayang Bandir and Sandean Raja is a folk story from Simalungun.
Local people mention it as Bukit Kapur Tinggi Raja, but some people have also called it "Kawah Putih" (White Crater), the same name asKawah Putih inWest Java. The crater is located in Dolok Tinggi Raja Village, 90 kilometres fromMedan or 3 to 4 hours drive by motorcycle on the route Medan-Lubuk Pakam-Galang-Bangun Purba-Dolok Tinggi Raja.[4]
Parapat is a small town located on the shore ofLake Toba. This place is known for tourism, and ferry services toSamosir Island are also available.
