Silverstone is a village andcivil parish in theWest Northamptonshire unitary authority area ofNorthamptonshire, England.[2] The village is about 3.5 miles (5.6 km) south-southwest ofTowcester and 6.5 miles (10.5 km) northeast ofBrackley, both accessed via theA43 main road which now bypasses Silverstone to the south and east. The village is also about 11.5 miles (18.5 km) south-southwest ofNorthampton, 12 miles (19 km) west-northwest ofMilton Keynes, and 13.5 miles (21.7 km) east-northeast ofBanbury. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 2,176.[3]

The village's name probably means 'farm/settlement of Saewulf/Sigewulf'.[4]

TheSilverstone Circuit, the current home of theBritish Grand Prix and theBritish motorcycle Grand Prix, is located nearby; it straddles the Northamptonshire andBuckinghamshire border.

The village is listed in theDomesday Book of 1086 asSilvestone andSelvestone.

Parish church

Silverstone had a chapel by 1200 CE.[5] In about 1780 the medieval building was replaced by aGeorgian one, which was enlarged by the addition of achancel in 1841 and a northaisle andvestry in 1852.[5] The entire church was demolished[5] in the 1880s and replaced by the presentChurch of England parish church ofSaint Michael, which is aGothic Revival building designed byJames Piers St Aubyn and completed in 1884.[6]

On the north side of the parish churchyard are the remains of medievalfish ponds.

Facilities

The village has onepublic house: the White Horse Inn.

About one-half mile (one kilometre) south of the village is theSilverstone Circuit, a formerRoyal Air ForceWorld War II bomber base and now the traditional home of theBritish Grand Prix, aFormula One race that attracts around 480,000 visitors each year.[7]

Silverstone University Technical College opened at the circuit in September 2013.

Adjacent to Silverstone Circuit is Silverstone Park, a business park operated byMEPC plc, with a focus on engineering and high-tech activities. The site is home to over 80 organisations, includingDavid Brown Automotive,Delta Motorsport,Ducati UK Ltd, National College for Motorsport, Danecca Limited, Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence,ELMS teamVector Sport,[8] andFormula E teamsEnvision Racing andCupraKiro.[9] It also features the UK's only dedicated sub-contract inspectionmetrology facility, managed by Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence, a technical partner toRed Bull Formula 1.

Silverstone is also the base of the Formula One constructorAston Martin—formerly known asRacing Point,Force India andJordan—and is set to be the British base ofCadillac Formula One.[10]It is also the home of theFormula 2 teamHitech Grand Prix.

In the Middle Ages, the village trade was primarily in timber from the surroundingWhittlewood forest through the use of coppicing. Linnell Brothers still operate a woodyard to this day.[11]
