Silvano Agosti (born 23 March 1938) is an Italian film director, screenwriter, documentarist and film editor.
Born inBrescia, Agosti graduated in direction at theCentro Sperimentale di Cinematografia and specialized in editing at theGerasimov Institute of Cinematography in Moscow.[1][2] After directing several shorts and serving as film editor inMarco Bellocchio'sFists in the Pocket, he made his feature film debut in 1967 withGarden of Delights, which was heavily cut from censorship.[1][2] In the following years he mostly focused on socio-political documentaries, dealing with themes such as theprotests of 1968, of the resistance against the 'Colonels' regime in Greece, and thestrategy of tension.[2]
In the second half of the 1970s, Agosti founded in Rome the cineclub Azzurro Scipioni, which became a reference point for art cinema filmmakers and film buffs.[2] Known by Italians as a small Louvre of cinema.[3]In 1987, his filmQuartiere was entered into the main competition at the44th Venice International Film Festival.[4] In 1992, he won theCiak d'Oro for best editing for his filmSweet War, Farewell.[5] In 2019, he received theNastro d'Argento Lifetime Achievement Award for his career.[6]
In addition to his film work, Agosti is also active as a novelist and poet.[1]
