Sierra del Tigre is a mountain range in northeasternSonora,Mexico at the northern region of theSierra Madre Occidental. The region containssky island mountain ranges, called theMadrean Sky Islands, some separated from the Sierra Madre Occidental proper, and occurring in the northeasternSonoran Desert, and extreme west-northwesternChihuahuan Desert. Many of the ranges occur in southeastArizona.
The Sierra del Tigre mountain range lies south of theSan Bernardino Valley (Arizona) south of theChiricahua Mountains; also theSwisshelm,Pedrogosa, andPerilla Mountains. The range is southeast ofDouglas, Arizona-Agua Prieta, Sonora.
Sierra del Tigre is located in the subregion of theSonoran Desert called thePlains of Sonora[1] along with some example mountain ranges, Sierra Mazatan, Sierra San Javier, and Cananea San Pedro. The threats includeurbanization, land clearing, etc. Theriparian protected wetland and grassland to the north in the San Bernardino Valley is theSan Bernardino National Wildlife Refuge;Leslie Canyon National Wildlife Refuge is also nearby.
Home to theJaneros local group of theNednhi-ChiricahuaApache, who were led by fearedJuh in the 1870s, the Sierra El Tigre was one of the last strongholds for fighting Apaches against Mexican and U.S. forces in search of Apache war parties into the 1930s.
