Early life

[edit]

Chaturvedi was born on 29 April 1993 inBallia,Uttar Pradesh and moved toMumbai when he was five years old.[1][2][3][4] His father is a chartered accountant and his mother is a homemaker.[4] He attendedMithibai College in Mumbai and initially aspired to be a chartered accountant (CA), while acting on-stage for his passion. While pursuing his CA articleship, he became disillusioned and took some time off, during which he participated in and wonThe Times of India's Fresh Face Contest in 2013.[4][5]

Career

[edit]

Early work and breakthrough (2016–2019)

[edit]

In 2016, Chaturvedi appeared in the web television sitcomLife Sahi Hai, about four male roommates.[6] The following year, he began starring as Prashant Kanaujia, a teenage cricketer, in theAmazon Prime Video seriesInside Edge, which was inspired by theIndian Premier League.[7] Reviewing the first season forScroll.in, Devarsi Ghosh considered Chaturvedi and his co-starTanuj Virwani to be the show's "two big acting discoveries".[8] He later reprised his role for the second season in 2019.[9]

Chaturvedi in 2019

He auditioned for a small role inBrahmāstra: Part One – Shiva (2022) and got selected. However, following advice from his father, Chaturvedi refused to do the film. He was offered a three film contract by the film's producerKaran Johar ofDharma Productions, which he also refused, after which, he claimed that he was briefly blacklisted from the industry for refusing to do minor roles.[10] At a success party ofInside Edge, filmmakerZoya Akhtar, whose brotherFarhan Akhtar produced the show, spotted and asked Chaturvedi to audition for her next directorialGully Boy (2019), which marked his film debut and proved to be hisbreakthrough role.[11] StarringRanveer Singh andAlia Bhatt, the film saw Chaturvedi play the supporting role of a street rapper named MC Sher, who fuels the ambitions ofRanveer Singh's titular character. Jay Weissberg ofVariety found Chaturvedi to be "impressive" in his part, andRajeev Masand and Rishabh Goel commended his "charming presence".[12][13] At the annualFilmfare Awards ceremony, he was awarded with theFilmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor in addition to a nomination forBest Male Debut.[14][15]

Career fluctuations (2020–)

[edit]

Chaturvedi next appeared inYash Raj Films'sBunty Aur Babli 2 (2021), co-starringRani Mukerji,Saif Ali Khan andSharvari Wagh, a sequel to the crime comedyBunty Aur Babli (2005).[16] It emerged as a critical andcommercial failure.[17] He had a lead role inShakun Batra'sGehraiyaan (2022), a drama about infidelity, co-starringDeepika Padukone andAnanya Panday. It was released onAmazon Prime Video.[18] Sukanya Verma ofRediff.com found his portrayal of a "tricky part" to be "compelling".[19] He then featured in the comedy horror filmPhone Bhoot withKatrina Kaif andIshaan Khatter.[20] Reviewers were generally unimpressed with the picture,[21] but Saibal Chatterjee ofNDTV opined that Chaturvedi had played his "brash and quick-on-the-draw" character well.[22]

Chaturvedi then appeared alongside Panday andAdarsh Gourav in the coming-of-age dramaKho Gaye Hum Kahan (2023). In her review forHindustan Times, Monika Rawal Kukreja described Chatruvedi as "effortless and natural" with a "strong screen presence".[23] In the following year, he had a starring role in the action filmYudhra from director Ravi Udyawar.[24]Shubhra Gupta ofThe Indian Express considered it a downgrade after his work onKho Gaye Hum Kahan, and the film emerged as a box-office bomb.[25][26] In 2025, Chaturvedi starred oppositeTriptii Dimri in the spiritual sequelDhadak 2, a remake of the Tamil filmPariyerum Perumal.[27] The film follows an inter-caste couple (played by Chaturvedi and Dimri) who fall in love in college despite their families' objections. In a mixed review of the film,Hindustan Times' Rishabh Suri commended his performance of a "young man trapped in systemic injustice but still searching for a way out", particularly in the film's second half.[28] Additionally, Rahul Desai ofThe Hollywood Reporter India noted that Chatruvedi had finally "refurbished the potential" he first displayed inGully Boy after a series of unremarkable films.[29] Despite its positive critical reception,Dhadak 2 failed at the box-office.[30]

Chaturvedi will next feature alongsideJaya Bachchan andWamiqa Gabbi in the comedy filmDil Ka Darwaaza Khol Na Darling, and will reunite with Udyawar in the romanceDo Deewane Seher Mein.[31]
