TheSiberian house martin oreastern house martin (Delichon lagopodum) is apasserine bird in the swallow familyHirundinidae. It breeds in rocky areas of northeastern Russia, Mongolia and northern China and winters in Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia. It was formerly consideredconspecific with thewestern house martin.
The Siberian house martin wasformally described in 1811 by the German naturalistPeter Simon Pallas under thebinomial nameHirundo lagopoda. He specified thelocality asDauria, a mountainous region to the east ofLake Baikal in Russia.[2][3] The specific epithet combines theAncient Greeklagōs meaning "hare" withpous, podos meaning foot, a reference to the Siberian martin's fully-feathered feet.[4] The Siberian house martin is now placed in thegenusDelichon.[5] This martin was formerly considered to be asubspecies of thecommon house martin but was promoted to species status based on morphological and vocal differences.[5][6] The species ismonotypic: nosubspecies are recognised.[5]
