Lin Li-hui (born 16 April 1976)[1][2] (Chinese:林立慧),[3] known professionally asShu Qi (Chinese:舒淇), is a Hong Kong–Taiwanese actress and filmmaker. Widely regarded as one of the most successful Taiwanese actresses of all time, Shu has received threeHong Kong Film Awards and twoGolden Horse Awards among many other awards.

Shu first gained recognition inViva Erotica (1996). Since then, she has collaborated with directorHou Hsiao-hsien on three films:Millennium Mambo (2001),Three Times (2005), andThe Assassin (2015). She has also played leading roles in arthouse films and box-office hits, includingIf You Are the One (2008),A Beautiful Life (2011),Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons (2013), andGone with the Bullets (2014).

Shu ranked 18th onForbesChina Celebrity 100 list in 2013,[4] 23rd in 2014,[5] 32nd in 2015,[6] 48th in 2017,[7] and 90th in 2019.[8]

Early life

Born in Xindian township,Taipei County (nowNew Taipei City), Shu Qi went toHong Kong at the age of 17 to seek a film career. She began in thesoftcore pornography modelling industry, appearing in the Chinese edition ofPlayboy.[9] She eventually came under the management of Hong Kong film producerManfred Wong, who signed her to severalHong Kong Category III films such asSex & Zen II (1996).

1996–1999: Early roles

Shu starred inDerek Yee's 1996 filmViva Erotica, about the erotic film industry in Hong Kong, withKaren Mok andLeslie Cheung. She received the Best Supporting Actress award for her performance inViva Erotica at the16th Hong Kong Film Awards in 1997.[10] She has since appeared in Hong Kong films such asPortland Street Blues (1998),City of Glass (1998), the box office hitGorgeous (1999),Stanley Kwan'sThe Island Tales (1999) andHou Hsiao-hsien'sMillennium Mambo (2001), making her transition into mainstream acting.[11]

2002–2009

In 2002, Shu starred in the French filmThe Transporter, the first installment of theTransporter franchise. This marked her first foray into the American market. Among Shu's earlier notable works wereThe Foliage (2004), a romance film set in Yunnan during the Cultural Revolution.[12] She won the Best Actress award at the 13thShanghai Film Critics Awards for her performance.[13] Shu worked with Hou again inThree Times (2005), which competed at theCannes Film Festival[14] and won Shu the Best Actress award at theGolden Horse Awards.[15] In 2006, Shu starred in thethird installment of the gangster filmMy Wife Is a Gangster alongside Korean actorLee Beom-soo.[16]

She then starred alongsideTony Leung Chiu-wai andTakeshi Kaneshiro in the crime dramaConfession of Pain (2006).[17] In 2008, she had a small but memorable role in the American romantic comedyNew York, I Love You. Shu served as a jury member at the58th Berlin International Film Festival in 2008,[18] and the62nd Cannes Film Festival in 2009.[19] The same year, she was honored at theHuabiao Awards as Best Actress for the Taiwan and Hong Kong region for her performance in the romantic comedy filmIf You Are the One, directed byFeng Xiaogang. The romantic comedy was the highest-grossing Chinese film of the year.[20][21]

2010–2023

Shu starred inJourney to the West: Conquering the Demons (2013), directed byStephen Chow and loosely based on the Chinese literary classicJourney to the West. The film overtookLost in Thailand to become the highest-grossing Chinese movie.[22] Shu reunited with Hou in his firstwuxia film,The Assassin (2015), starring as the title character. The film received overwhelmingly positive reviews at theCannes Film Festival,[23] and Shu won theBest Actress award at theAsian Film Festival.[24] It was selected as the Taiwanese entry for theBest Foreign Language Film at the88th Academy Awards but it was not nominated.[25] The same year, she starred in the blockbuster filmMojin: The Lost Legend,adapted from popular adventure novel seriesGhost Blows Out the Light.[26]

In 2016, Shu,Feng Shaofeng andVictoria Song starred in theChinese remake ofMy Best Friend's Wedding.[27] She was also cast in fantasy comedyThe Village of No Return, which premiered at the first day of Spring Festival in 2017.[28] In 2017, Shu starred inStephen Fung'sThe Adventurers alongsideJean Reno andAndy Lau.[29] Shu appears in the 2019 science fiction filmShanghai Fortress, adapted from the 2006 novelOnce Upon a Time in Shanghai.[30] In 2023, Shu served as a jury member at the 80th Venice International Film Festival.[31][32]

2024–present

In June 2024, Shu was invited to become a member of theAcademy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.[33] She starred in theBi Gan's science fiction detective filmResurrection (2025) which debuted at theCannes Film Festival. The film was deemed polarizing as it divided critics at the festival.[34][35] Shu made her directorial debut with the filmGirl (2025), which was shortlisted for theGolden Lion at the82nd Venice International Film Festival.[36]

Modeling and other ventures

From 2006 to 2009, Shu was selected byKenzo Takada to be global spokesperson of the third advertising campaign for its successful fragranceFlower byKenzo.[37][38] She also worked as a spokesperson forShiatzy Chen.

Shu has been representingFrederique Constant in Asia as a brand ambassador since 2008. In 2009, she, along withFrederique Constant and Paint-a-Smile Foundation, repainted the murals on the walls of the cardiology department at the Beijing Children's Hospital.[39][40]

Shu was alsoEmporio Armani's Asian ambassador for its Fall/Winter 2010 collection.[41] and is also the brand spokesperson forBulgari in China. Since 2023, she has been announced as Global Brand Ambassador ofBulgari.[42] In February 2023, Shu has been Global Spokesperson for American high-end fashion houseMichael Kors.[43][44] In March 2023, American luxury beauty brandTom Ford Beauty announced Shu as their brand ambassador for Fragrance and Make-up for the China andAsia-Pacific regions.[45][46] In October 2023, Italian luxury fashion houseBottega Veneta announced Shu Qi as Global Brand Ambassador, which she also appeared in an exclusive campaign of the brand.[47][48] In September 2024,Tom Ford Beauty named Shu as its global ambassador.[49] In January 2025, American luxury beauty brandEstée Lauder named Shu as its global spokesperson for skincare.[50]

Personal life

Shu married Hong Kong actor-directorStephen Fung in 2016. The two, who met on the set of the romance dramaBishonen in 1997, remained friends for 20 years, but only dated for four years prior to marriage.[51][52]
