Shashi Bhushan (1924–2011) was anIndian independence activist, social worker, politician, writer and an institution builder.[1] He was the founder of several organisations such as Rashtriya Ekta Samiti, All India Freedom Fighters' Organisation,[2] Punjab Ekta Samiti and the Institute for Socialist Education, and representedKhargone (Madhya Pradesh) ( 1967- 1971) and South Delhi constituency in the5th Lok Sabha (1971–1977).[3][4]
Born on 11 November 1924 atLashkar of the Indian princely state ofGwalior, now in the state ofMadhya Pradesh). Shashi Bhushan was involved in the Indian freedom struggle and participated in theQuit India movement.[5]
After the Indian independence, he continued his association with theIndian National Congress and contested in theIndian general elections of 1971, winning fromSouth Delhi constituency againstBalraj Madhok, the then president ofJan Sangh.[6] He was the authorFeroze Gandhi: A Political Biography,[7] the only known work about the life of the politician-journalist husband ofIndira Gandhi.[8] He has beenMember of parliament, Lok Sabha fromKhargone (Lok Sabha constituency) ofMadhya Pradesh from 1967-1971 andSouth Delhi (Lok Sabha constituency) in5th Lok Sabha.
The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of thePadma Bhushan, in 2006, for his contributions to public affairs.[9] The Institute for Social Education, an institution he founded in 1970, was awarded theNational Communal Harmony Award by the President of India in 2007.[10]
He died on 30 September 2011, at the age of 86, succumbing to age-related illnesses, survived by his wife, son and daughter.[11]
