Mohamed Shariff Thowfeek (Tamil:முகம்மது சரிப் தௌஃபீக்,romanized: Mukam'matu Carip Tauḥpīk; born 7 January 1971) is aSri Lankan politician, former provincial councillor, former deputy minister andMember of Parliament.[1]

Early life and family

Thowfeek was born on 7 January 1971.[1] He is the brother of former MPK. M. Thowfeek.[2]

Career

Thowfeek contested the2000 parliamentary election as one of thePeople's Alliance (PA)electoral alliance's candidates inTrincomalee District and was elected to theParliament.[3] The alliance between theSri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) and PA crumbled in June 2001 and in October 2001 the SLMC joined the oppositionUnited National Front (UNF).[4][5][6][7]

Thowfeek contested the2001 parliamentary election as one of the UNF's candidates in Trincomalee District but failed to get re-elected.[8] However, after the election he was appointed to the Parliament as aNational List MP representing the UNF.[9][10] He contested the2004 parliamentary election as a SLMC candidate in Trincomalee District but failed to get re-elected after coming 3rd amongst the SLMC candidates.[11]

Thowfeek contested the2008 provincial council election as one of the UNF's candidates in Trincomalee District and was elected to theEastern Provincial Council.[12] He contested the2010 parliamentary election as one of the UNF's candidates in Trincomalee District and was re-elected.[13] Following the2015 presidential election and the change in government Thowfeek was appointed Deputy Minister of Internal Transport in January 2015.[14][15][16]

Thowfeek contested the2015 parliamentary election as one of theUnited National Front for Good Governance (UNFGG) electoral alliance's candidates in Trincomalee District but failed to get re-elected.[17][18] However, following the resignation ofA. R. A. Hafeez in January 2016 he was appointed to the Parliament as a National List MP representing the UNFGG.[19][20][21] He contested the2020 parliamentary election as aSamagi Jana Balawegaya electoral alliance candidate in Trincomalee District and was re-elected.[22][23]
