Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid Saikat (Bengali:শরফুদ্দৌলা ইবনে শহীদ) (born 16 October 1976), also known asSharfuddoula Saikat, is an internationalcricket umpire and a formerfirst-class player fromBangladesh.[1][2] In March 2024, he became the first Bangladeshi umpire to be included in theElite Panel of ICC Umpires.[3][4] He also officiated in 100 matches in men's international cricket includingICC Men's Cricket World Cup in2023.[5][6]
Saikat was a student ofRajshahi University School.He completed hishonours and masters inInternational relations fromDhaka University and later earned anMBA major in Marketing and inHuman resource management fromAIUB.[7]
In 1994 Sharfuddoula played three matches forBangladesh at the1994 ICC Trophy in Kenya.[8] Sharfuddoula also played 10first-class cricket matches forDhaka Metropolis in 2000 and 2001.[9]
He made his first-class umpiring debut in February 2007 in a match betweenBarisal Division andSylhet Division.[10]
In January 2010, he stood in his firstOne Day International match betweenBangladesh andSri Lanka, becoming the tenth Bangladeshi to umpire at international level.[11]
He was one of the match officials for the2018 Cricket World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe.[12] He was one of the twelve on-field umpires for the2018 ICC Women's World Twenty20.[13] In October 2019, he was appointed as one of the twelve umpires to officiate matches in the2019 ICC T20 World Cup Qualifier in the United Arab Emirates.[14] In January 2020, he was named as one of the sixteen umpires for the2020 Under-19 Cricket World Cup in South Africa.[15]
In February 2021, he was named as an on-field umpire for both the test matches playedbetween Bangladesh and West Indies, becoming the fifth Bangladeshi umpires to officiate in test matches.[16][17]
In February 2022, he was named one of the on-field umpires for the2022 Women's Cricket World Cup in New Zealand.[18][19]In January 2023, he was named one of the on-field umpires for the2023 ICC Under-19 Women's T20 World Cup.[20][21]
In March 2023, during the 3rd T20Ibetween Bangladesh and Ireland, he became the first Bangladeshi umpire to officiate in 100 men's international matches.[22][23]
In September 2023, he was named as one of the sixteen match officials for2023 Cricket World Cup,[24] becoming the first Bangladeshi umpire to be named as one of the umpires for theMen's World Cup.[25][26] He was selected to stand in 5 matches as an on-field umpire in the World Cup including a group stage match betweenAustralia and New Zealand.[27]
In January 2024, he became the second Bangladeshi umpire, afterEnamul Haque Moni, to officiate a Test match as a neutral umpire outside Bangladesh, being named as an on-field umpire for the2nd Test between Australia and West Indies.[28]
On 28 March 2024, following the International Cricket Council’s annual review and selection process, he became the first Bangladeshi umpire to be included in theElite Panel of ICC Umpires.[29] He replaced South African umpireMarais Erasmus who retired from umpiring in international cricket in February 2024.[30]
In May 2024, he was named one of the twenty umpires to officiate matches in the2024 Men's T20 World Cup.[31]
In December 2024, during the4th Test ofBorder–Gavaskar Trophy, one of his decisions as theThird umpire created a controversy when he gave his decision relying on visual evidence instead of going with technological evidence. However, His decision was praised and backed by several cricket experts includingSimon Taufel,Ricky Ponting,Ravi Shastri,Michael Vaughan andRohit Sharma, the captain ofIndian cricket team.[32][33][34]
In February 2025, he was named one of the match officials for2025 ICC Champions Trophy.[35]
