Shantar Sea

Part of the Sea of Okhotsk

TheShantar Sea (Russian:Шантарское море) is a small coastal sea in the northwesternSea of Okhotsk.

It is bounded to the north byBolshoy Shantar Island, to the east byMalyy Shantar Island, and to the south byTugur Bay.

History

The sea was frequented byAmericanwhaleships huntingbowhead whales between 1853 and 1874.[1]Russianschooners fromMamga also cruised for bowheads in the sea from 1865 to 1871.[2]
