Sutherland made his senior début forElgin City in theThird Division on 23 January 2010, while on loan fromInverness Caledonian Thistle.[1]
He was released by Inverness Caledonian Thistle at the end of the2012–13 season,[2][3] and signed forElgin City in July 2013.[4] After two season with Elgin, Sutherland moved toScottish League One sidePeterhead in June 2015, signing a one-year contract.[5] At the end of his contract Sutherland returned toBorough Briggs for his third spell with Elgin.[6] In January 2019 he returned to Peterhead.[7]
On 16 January 2020, Elgin announced that Sutherland would be leaving at the conclusion of the 2019–20 season to rejoin his first club, Inverness Caledonian Thistle.[8][9]
However, due to an extensive ACL injury, Sutherland was released by the club, which ignited controversy after Sutherland claimed to have been released by email and was having to fund the surgeries himself, which Inverness denied by claiming they had adhered to employment law and that the club was paying for specialist medical support.[10][11]
He returned to football in 2024 signing forHighland League sideBrora Rangers, signing a three-year contract.[12]
