Shane Barrett (born 31 January 2001) is an Irishhurler. At club level he plays withBlarney and at inter-county level with theCork senior hurling team. He usually lines out as a centre-forward.
Born and raised in Rathpeacon,County Cork, Barrett first played hurling to a high standard as a student atChristian Brothers College, Cork. He progressed through the various age grades before joining the school's senior team in 2017.[1] Barret's final year with the college ended with defeat byMidleton CBS in the2019 Harty Cup final, before losing toSt Kieran's College in theAll-Ireland semi-final.[2][3] He later studied atUniversity College Cork and immediately joined their freshers' hurling team before later joining UCC'sFitzgibbon Cup panel.[4][5]
Barrett began his club career at juvenile and underage levels with theBlarney club. He had his first major success when Blarney beatCarrigaline by 1-11 to 0-12 to claim the Cork Premier 2 MHC title in 2016.[6] He was still eligible for the minor grade two years later whenMidleton beat Blarney by 1-22 to 1-10 to win the Cork Premier 1 MHC title.[7]
Barrett immediately progressed to adult level and made hischampionship debut in April 2019 in a 0-24 to 2-12 defeat ofBallinhassig.[8] He won aCork PIHC medal in October 2020 after scoring two points from play in Blarney's 1-20 to 0-15 defeat ofCastlelyons in thefinal.[9] Barrett was the team'stop scorer with 1-69 in 2023, when Blarney ended theirCork SAHC campaign with a defeat byBride Rovers in afinal replay.[10]
Barrett first played forCork as a member of theunder-17 team during the holding of a one-off special championship in 2017. He won aMunster U17HC medal in this grade after a defeat ofWaterford, before coming on as a substitute forBlake Murphy in Cork's subsequent 1-19 to 1-17 defeat ofDublin in theAll-Ireland final.[11] Barrett progressed to theminor team proper ascaptain the following year.[12] After a year with no inter-county activity, he joined Cork'sunder-20 team in 2020. Success in this grade was immediate with Barrett claimingMunster andAll-Ireland U20HC medals in 2020 after respective defeats ofTipperary andDublin.[13][14]
Barrett had one more year of under-20 hurling, however, his inclusion on thesenior team in 2021 made him ineligible for the grade.[15][16] Debuts in theNational Hurling League andMunster SHC followed later that season.[17] Barret came on as a substitute forDarragh Fitzgibbon when Cork suffered a 3-32 to 1-22 defeat byLimerick in the2021 All-Ireland final.[18] He was at centre-forward when Cork lost the2022 National League final toWaterford.[19]
Barrett lined out at centre-forward for Cork's 3–29 to 1–34 extra-time defeat byClare in the2024 All-Ireland final.[20] He was presented with anAll-Star award at the end of the 2024 season.[21] Barrett claimed his first senior silverware in April 2025 when Cork won theNational Hurling League title following a 3–24 to 0–23 win overTipperary in the final.[22] This was later followed by aMunster SHC medal after Cork's penalty shootout defeat ofLimerick in the2025 Munster final.[23]
