Shamilsky District (Russian:Шамильский райо́н;Avar:Шамилил мухъ) is an administrative[1] and municipal[5] district (raion), one of theforty-one in theRepublic of Dagestan,Russia. It is located in the western central part of the republic. The area of the district is 920 square kilometers (360 sq mi).[2] Itsadministrative center is therural locality (aselo) ofKhebda.[1] As of the2010 Census, the total population of the district was 28,122, with the population of Khebda accounting for 9.1% of that number.[3]

History

Until 1994, the district was calledSovetsky (Сове́тский).[10]

Administrative and municipal status

Within theframework of administrative divisions, Shamilsky District is one of theforty-one in theRepublic of Dagestan.[1] The district is divided into tenselsoviets which comprise fifty-tworural localities.[4] As amunicipal division, the district is incorporated asShamilsky Municipal District.[5] Its ten selsoviets are incorporated as twenty-five rural settlements within the municipal district.[5] Theselo ofKhebda serves as the administrative center of both the administrative[1] and municipal[11] district.
