TheShōgitai (彰義隊, "Manifest Righteousness Regiment") was an elitesamuraishock infantry formation of theTokugawa shogunate military formed in 1868 by thehatamotoAmano Hachirō [ja] and HitotsubashiGosankyō retainerShibusawa Seiichirō [ja] inZōshigaya,Edo (nowTokyo). The Shōgitai took a large part in the battles of theBoshin War, especially at theBattle of Toba–Fushimi, and, after being assigned the defence ofKan'ei-ji temple, theBattle of Ueno, where they were nearly annihilated.[1][2]

After the Battle of Ueno, some surviving Shōgitai fled north, eventually joining the rebels of theEzo Republic. Following the defeat of Ezo, most of the few remaining former Shōgitai settled inHokkaido astondenhei.[3] Among the survivors wasToyohara Chikanobu, who later achieved fame as a masternishiki-e artist.
