Setchellanthus caeruleus is a species ofpungent shrub with large blue flowers. It is placed alone in the genusSetchellanthus, which is in turn, is placed alone in the familySetchellanthaceae. It is endemic toMexico.[1]
The genus and the species werecircumscribed byTownshend Stith Brandegee in Univ. Calif. Publ. Bot. vol.3 on page 378 in 1909.[1]
The genus name ofSetchellanthus is in honour ofWilliam Albert Setchell (1864–1943), who was an American botanist and marinephycologist who taught at theUniversity of California, Berkeley, where he headed the Botany Department.[2] The specific epithetcaeruleus is the Latin for "blue".[3]
