Serhy Yekelchyk (Ukrainian:Сергій Єкельчик,romanized: Serhiy Yekelchyk; born November 13, 1966, inKyiv) is aUkrainian Canadianhistorian, who has published widely on modernUkrainian andRussian history and Russian-Ukrainian relations.[1]
Yekelchyk received hisB.A. from theUniversity of Kyiv and hisM.A. from theUkrainian Academy of Sciences. He conducted research in Australia in the early 1990s, then moved toEdmonton to complete hisPh.D. at theUniversity of Alberta in 2000.[2] He was a postdoctoral fellow and visiting assistant professor at theUniversity of Michigan the following year. Since 2001, he has taught at theUniversity of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. He currently serves as president of the Canadian Association of Ukrainian Studies.
Much of Yekelchyk's recent work focuses onStalinist culture and political life, especially in theUkrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. He has also written about Soviet nationalities policy and aboutUkrainian national identity from the late nineteenth century to the present.[2] His bookUkraine: Birth of a Modern Nation was the first historical survey to include the2004 Orange Revolution and has since been translated into five languages.[1]
