Sergio Daniel Martínez Alzuri (born 15 February 1969) is a former Uruguayan professionalfootballer who played as astriker. He was a two-timetop scorer of theArgentine Primera División atBoca Juniors and also played professionally in Spain.

Club career

Born inMontevideo, Martínez started his professional career withDefensor Sporting Club in 1986. In 1991, he signed forC.A. Peñarol, switching to Argentina in the following year withBoca Juniors.

In his five years with Boca, Martínez won theApertura in 1992 and theCopa de Oro in 1993, being crowned theApertura 1993's top scorer with 12 goals and theClausura 1997's with 15; upon his departure, he ranked seventh in the club's all-time scoring list with 86 goals in 167 games (all competitions).

In January 1998, Martínez moved to Spain to play forDeportivo de La Coruña,[1] only appearing in threeLa Liga matches in more than one year[2] before returning to his homeland to finish his career, atClub Nacional de Football.

International career

In1995, Martínez helpedUruguay win theCopa América, scoring the decisivepenalty in theshootout againstBrazil in the final.[3] The recipient of 35 fullcaps,[4] he was also summoned for the1990 FIFA World Cup, appearing in one game as the national side exited in theround of 16 (90 minutes againstSouth Korea, 1–0 triumph).[5]
