Sergio Horacio Egea Rueda (born 21 September 1957) is a retired Argentinefootballer who played as acentral defender, and is a manager of SpanishSalamanca CF UDS.
Born inNecochea, Egea graduated fromEstudiantes de La Plata's youth setup, after a stint with Cruz de Necochea.[1] He made his debuts as a senior with South Africa'sLusitano FC, before moving to Spain.[citation needed]
In Spain, Egea representedHércules CF B,Elche CF,Recreativo de Huelva,UD Barbastro,Orihuela Deportiva CF andNovelda CF, retiring with the latter in 1989.[citation needed]
Immediately after retiring Egea took up coaching, starting with UDF Sax. In 1995, he was appointedReal Madrid Castilla manager, leading the club to fourth position duringhis first season.[2]
After another stint atCD Toledo,[3]Hércules CF[4] andReal Valladolid B,[5] Egea started working withHugo Sánchez, being his assistant atPumas UNAM,Club Necaxa, theMexico national football team andUD Almería, only leaving in 2009.[6]
On 23 April 2012 Egea was namedEstudiantes de Altamira manager.[7] He was sacked on 4 March of the following year, after a 0–2 home defeat againstLobos de la BUAP.[8]
On 13 February 2014 Egea returned to Spain, being appointed at the helm ofCD Eldense.[9] Afterwinning promotion fromTercera División with the side, he was namedReal Oviedo manager on 6 July.[10]
On 13 June 2015, after being crowned champions ofSegunda División B and taking the side back toSegunda División after a 12-year absence, Egea renewed his contract with theAsturians for a further year.[11] On 14 March of the following year, despite his side being third-placed, he resigned alleging "personal reasons".[12]
On 23 August 2017, Egea was named interim manager ofPumas UNAM,[13] but stepped down in October. On 22 April 2019, he returned to Oviedo in the place of departedJuan Antonio Anquela,[14] but was dismissed on 15 September after only one point in the five matches ofthe new season.[15]
Egea's sons,Lauren andAlexis, are both also footballers. The former is aforward,[16] while the latter is also a defender.[17]
