TheSegugio dell'Appennino is an Italianbreed of smallscenthound, bred specifically to hunthare. It may be either smooth-haired or wire-haired.[2] It is one of four Italian breeds of scenthound, the others being theSegugio Italiano a Pelo Forte, theSegugio Italiano a Pelo Raso and theSegugio Maremmano.[3] It received full recognition from theEnte Nazionale della Cinofilia Italiana in 2010;[4] it is not recognised by theFédération Cynologique Internationale.
The Segugio dell'Appennino was described as a breed or type distinct from other Italian dogs ofsegugio type in 1882, in an article in the magazineLa Caccia Illustrata.[2] Abreed standard was drawn up by theEnte Nazionale della Cinofilia Italiana in 2005,[5]: 327 and the breed received full recognition in 2010.[4] From 2013 to 2022 the number of annual registrations varied from 205 to 414.[2]
In 2015 an analysis ofmicrosatellite data found no significantgenetic distance between the Segugio dell'Appennino and theSegugio Maremmano.[5]: 329
