The federal constituency was created in the 1955 redistribution and is mandated to return a single member to the Dewan Rakyat under the first past the post voting system.
From 1982 to 2018, the Member of Parliament for Segamat was always someone named "Subramaniam" fromMIC, but they were three different individuals.[8] From 1982 to 1990 and again from 1995 to 2004, the MP wasSubramaniam Sinniah (commonly known as S. Subramaniam).[9] Between 1990 and 1995, the seat was held by S.S. Subramaniam (commonly known as SS).[10] From 2004 to 2018, the seat was represented bySubramaniam Sathasivam.
