sftp is acommand-line interface clientprogram to transfer files using theSSH File Transfer Protocol (SFTP), which runs inside the encryptedSecure Shell connection.

It provides an interactive interface similar to that of traditional command-lineFTP clients.

One common implementation ofsftp is part of theOpenSSH project.^[1] There are other command-line SFTP clients that use different names, such aslftp, PSFTP and PSCP (fromPuTTY package) andWinSCP.
