Sebastian Stan (born August 13, 1982) is a Romanian-born American actor. He gained recognition for his role asBucky Barnes / Winter Soldier in theMarvel Cinematic Universe media franchise, beginning with the filmCaptain America: The First Avenger (2011), and serving as a lead actor in theDisney+ miniseriesThe Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021) and the filmThunderbolts* (2025).

On television, Stan playedCarter Baizen inGossip Girl (2007–2010) and theMad Hatter inOnce Upon a Time (2012), and starred in the miniseriesPolitical Animals (2012). In 2022, he received critical acclaim for playingTommy Lee in theHulu miniseriesPam & Tommy earning nominations for aPrimetime Emmy Award and aGolden Globe Award. OnBroadway, Stan has appeared in theEric Bogosian playTalk Radio (2007) and starred in theWilliam Inge playPicnic (2013).

On film, Stan had a supporting role inThe Martian (2015), and starred inI, Tonya (2017) andFresh (2022). For his performance inA Different Man (2024), he won aSilver Bear for Best Leading Performance and aGolden Globe Award for Best Actor. For his portrayal of a youngDonald Trump inThe Apprentice (2024), Stan earned a nomination for theAcademy Award for Best Actor.

Early life and education

Stan was born August 13, 1982,[1][2] inConstanța, then in theRomanian SR. He was named by his pianist mother after the composerJohann Sebastian Bach.[3] His parents divorced when he was two years old. When he was eight, he and his mother, Georgeta Orlovschi,[4][5][6] moved to Vienna, Austria, where she was employed as a pianist, following theRevolutions of 1989.[7] Four years later, they moved toRockland County, New York, after his mother married the headmaster of a school in the United States.[8] He was raised in theRomanian Orthodox Church.[9]

During Stan's years at the Rockland school, he starred in productions includingHarvey,Cyrano de Bergerac,Little Shop of Horrors,Over Here!, andWest Side Story. He also attended theStagedoor Manor summer camp, where he was cast in many camp productions. It was then that he decided to take acting seriously and began applying to acting programs at several universities. He attendedRutgers University'sMason Gross School of the Arts, which enabled him to spend a year abroad studying acting atShakespeare's Globe Theatre in London, England. He graduated from Rutgers in 2005. Stan became a United States citizen in 2002.[10][11]

Career

1994–2013: Film debut and Broadway roles

After an appearance in the 1994Michael Haneke film71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance, Stan's career began in earnest in 2003 with a role onLaw & Order. This was followed by several film appearances, includingTony n' Tina's Wedding,The Architect, andThe Covenant (both 2006), followed by a recurring role onGossip Girl asCarter Baizen, beginning in 2007. Stan then had a lead role in the 2009 seriesKings as Jack Benjamin. In 2010, he appeared inDarren Aronofsky's ballet thrillerBlack Swan and played the role of antagonist Blaine in the comedyHot Tub Time Machine.[12] In 2011, he portrayedBucky Barnes in the filmCaptain America: The First Avenger, which was based on theMarvel Comics character. This was his first film in theMarvel Cinematic Universe, (MCU); it was not part of the nine-picture contract he later secured with Marvel Studios.[13] In a 2021 interview, Stan recalled that about a month after the Captain America film was released, he was struggling to pay his rent.[14]

In 2012, Stan starred in the thrillerGone and the supernatural horror filmThe Apparition; he also began a recurring role in the TV seriesOnce Upon a Time as theMad Hatter. A review byThe A.V. Club described his work in "Hat Trick", his premiere episode in that series, as "excellent" and placed the episode in their list of the 30 best episodes of 2012 from the series that did not make their top list.[15] It was initially reported the role would be recast for the spin-off seriesOnce Upon a Time in Wonderland due to Stan's commitment to the MCU,[16] butEdward Kitsis revealed that, in response to fan backlash and out of respect for Stan's performance, the character would not be recast and the series would instead proceed without the character.[17] The same year, he also appeared in theUSA Network miniseriesPolitical Animals as the troubled gay son of a former First Lady,[18] which earned him a nomination for theCritics' Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Movie/Miniseries. In 2013, Stan played Hal Carter in theRoundabout Theater Company's production ofWilliam Inge'sPicnic at theAmerican Airlines Theater in New York.[19]

2014–2019: MCU films andI, Tonya

InCaptain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Stan reprised his role as Bucky Barnes, with his character now re-namedWinter Soldier; this was the first film of his nine-film contract.[20] In 2015, he played Joshua Brummel inRicki and the Flash; he also co-starred inThe Martian as NASA scientist Dr. Chris Beck and inThe Bronze as Lance Tucker.[21] Stan next reprised his role as the Winter Soldier inAnt-Man (cameo appearance) (2015) andCaptain America: Civil War (2016). In 2017, Stan co-starred as NASCAR driver Dayton White inSteven Soderbergh's caper comedy,Logan Lucky,[22] and starred in the dramaI'm Not Here.[23] Also that year he co-starred inCraig Gillespie's biopicI, Tonya portrayingJeff Gillooly alongsideMargot Robbie asTonya Harding.[24]

In 2018, Stan again portrayed Winter Soldier in bothBlack Panther (as an uncredited cameo), andAvengers: Infinity War.[25] He then appeared oppositeNicole Kidman in the thriller filmDestroyer (2018).[26] Stan portrayed Charles Blackwood inWe Have Always Lived in the Castle, a film adaptation ofShirley Jackson's novel of the same name.[27] Stan's first film of 2019 wasAvengers: Endgame, released in April, in which he reprised his role as Winter Soldier. His second film that year,Endings, Beginnings, premiered at theToronto International Film Festival in September.[28]

Stan starred as protagonist Scott Huffman in theVietnam War film drama,The Last Full Measure (released in January 2020).[29] In addition, Stan appeared inMonday andThe Chain.[30] In February 2019, he replaced his MCU co-starChris Evans in the southern gothic crime drama filmThe Devil All the Time, which premiered on Netflix in 2020.[31] In April 2019,Disney confirmed that they would be releasing a Marvel television series starring Stan andAnthony Mackie, calledThe Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which began airing onDisney+ on March 19, 2021,[32][33] and ran through April 23, 2021. In May 2019, Stan joined the cast of the spy thriller,The 355 (released in 2022).[34][35]

2020–present: Critical recognition

Stan next starred asTommy Lee oppositeLily James asPamela Anderson inHulu'sbiographical miniseriesPam & Tommy (2022) centering around theirpersonal sex tape which was stolen in 1995.[36] Lucy Mangan ofThe Guardian described their performances as "astonishing" adding, "They each achieve the feat of uncannily resembling – aesthetically, vocally, and in every mannerism – the real-life people, without descending into mimicry."[37] For his performance he was nominated for thePrimetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie and theGolden Globe Award for Best Actor – Miniseries or Television Film. He also starred in theHulu thriller filmFresh (2022) oppositeDaisy Edgar-Jones.[38] Sophie Butcher ofEmpire praised their chemistry adding, "Stan in particular is having a ball, unleashing the kind of unhinged energy we’ve seen most recently from him inPam & Tommy".[39]

In 2023, Stan starred alongsideJulianne Moore inApple TV+ andA24's thriller,Sharper.[40] The following year, he won theSilver Bear for Best Leading Performance for playing a man withneurofibromatosis inA Different Man, and portrayed a youngDonald Trump inThe Apprentice.[41] For both roles, he received simultaneousGolden Globe nominations forBest Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy andBest Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama, respectively. He won forA Different Man.[42] ForThe Apprentice he was nominated for theAcademy andBAFTA Award for Best Actor.[43] In June 2025, Stan was invited to join theAcademy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.[44]

Stan reprised the role of Bucky Barnes twice in 2025, inCaptain America: Brave New World andThunderbolts*.[45] He will also play the character inAvengers: Doomsday.[46] By January 2026, he was cast asHarvey Dent inThe Batman: Part II (2027).[47]
