Sebastian Korda (/ˈkɔːrdə/KORD; born July 5, 2000) is an American professionaltennis player. He has a career-highATP singles ranking of world No. 15, achieved on 12 August 2024 and a best doubles ranking of No. 46, reached on 31 March 2025. He has won threeATP Tour titles combined, two in singles and one in doubles.

Early life and background

Korda was born in Bradenton, United States, to two Czech former tennis players, men's world No. 2Petr Korda and women's No. 26Regina Rajchrtová. His father was anAustralian Open champion andFrench Open finalist in both singles and doubles.

Korda started taking tennis lessons in his late childhood and rapidly took part on junior tournaments.

Juniors

Korda had good results on theITF junior circuit. He won theboys' singles title at the2018 Australian Open. This result came 20 years after his father, Petr, was crowned champion onmen's singles category in Melbourne.

He reached anITF junior combined ranking of world No. 1 on 29 January 2018.[2]

Professional career

2018: ATP Tour debut

Korda made his ATP main draw debut at theNew York Open. As a wildcard entry, he lost in the first round toFrances Tiafoe in three sets.[3]

2020: Major debut and fourth round

Korda made his Masters 1000 debut as a qualifier at the warm-upWestern & Southern Open tournament prior to the US Open. Korda made his Grand Slam debut as a wildcard at theUS Open where he was defeated byDenis Shapovalov.[4]

As a qualifier, Korda reached the fourth round at theFrench Open after beatingAndreas Seppi, 21st seedJohn Isner and fellow qualifierPedro Martínez. He lost to defending (and eventual) championRafael Nadal in straight sets.[5]

2021: First ATP title, Wimbledon 4th round

Korda reached his first ATP final at theDelray Beach Open defeatingCameron Norrie. He lost toHubert Hurkacz in straight sets.[6]

Korda made another breakthrough run at theMiami Masters, where he reached his first Masters 1000 quarterfinal. He beat 10th seedFabio Fognini in three sets, 17th seedAslan Karatsev in straight sets and scored his first top 10 win againstDiego Schwartzman in three sets.[7] He lost to 4th seedAndrey Rublev in the quarterfinals. He also reached a then career-high ranking of ATP world No. 62 on April 12, 2021.

In May, Korda lifted his first career ATP Tour singles title at theEmilia-Romagna Open, an ATP 250 tournament first played in 2021 due to the one-week delay of the2021 French Open. He beatMarco Cecchinato in the final and did not drop a set throughout the tournament. He also became the first American male tennis player to win on European clay sinceSam Querrey in2010.[8] As a result of this successful run, he reached a new then career-high of No. 50 on May 31, 2021.

In June at theHalle Open, his first ever ATP event on grass, Korda picked up his second top 10 win against 6th seedRoberto Bautista Agut|[9][10] along with beatingKei Nishikori en route to the quarterfinals,[11] where he lost to eventual championUgo Humbert.[12]

A week later, in his debut atWimbledon, Korda reached the fourth round for the first time in his career after defeating in-form player and 15th seedAlex de Minaur, qualifierAntoine Hoang,[13] and 22nd seedDan Evans.[14] However, he lost in the fourth round to 25th seedKaren Khachanov in five tight sets with the score in the fifth set being 10–8 after thirteen breaks of serve.[15] Despite the loss, he reached a new career-high ranking of No. 46 on July 12, 2021.

At theParis Masters, Korda defeated 13th seedAslan Karatsev and former world No. 3Marin Čilić. The win over Karatsev ended the Russian's push to qualify for the season-endingATP Finals.[16]

2022: Australian Open third round, top 30

Korda started his 2022 season by playing at theAustralian Open. In his debut, he upset world No. 12,Cameron Norrie, in the first round for his first victory at this event.[17] He went on to defeatCorentin Moutet in the second round in a tight five-set match with a super tiebreak in the fifth set to reach the third round for the first time at this Major.[18] In the third round, he lost to 19th seed and world No. 21,Pablo Carreño Busta.[19]

Seeded fifth at theDelray Beach Open, Korda reached the quarterfinals where he was defeated by top seed and eventual champion, Cameron Norrie.[20] InAcapulco, he was beaten in the first round byDušan Lajović.[21] Representing the USA during theDavis Cup tie against Colombia, he beatNicolás Mejía in his debut.[22] In the end, the USA won the tie over Colombia 4–0 to advance to theDavis Cup Finals.[23] In March, he competed at theBNP Paribas Open. He defeated qualifierThanasi Kokkinakis in the first round.[24] In the second round, he faced fourth seed, former world No. 1, and three-time champion,Rafael Nadal. Despite serving abreadstick in the second set and leading 5–2 in the final set, he lost to the eventual finalist in a third-set tiebreak.[25] At theMiami Open, he was knocked out of the tournament in the third round byMiomir Kecmanović.[26]

Korda started his clay court season at theMonte-Carlo Masters. He upset eighth seed, world No. 11, and recentMiami Open champion,Carlos Alcaraz, in the second round for the biggest win of his season; he gained revenge for his defeat to Alcaraz at theNext Generation ATP Finals.[27] He lost in the third round to 10th seed, world No. 13, and compatriot,Taylor Fritz.[28] InBarcelona, he fell in the first round to Spanish qualifierCarlos Taberner.[29] Seeded eighth at theEstoril Open, he stunned top seed and world No. 10,Félix Auger-Aliassime, in the quarterfinals avenging a2021 Acapulco loss, for his third top-10 win.[30][31]

At the2022 US Open, he reached the second round for the first time at this Major after defeatingFacundo Bagnis before losing in a five sets, all-American clash withTommy Paul.[32][33]

At the2022 Gijón Open he reached the third final of his career defeating en route third seedRoberto Bautista Agut,Andy Murray in the quarterfinals andArthur Rinderknech in the semifinals. He lost to top seedAndrey Rublev in straight sets.[34] He followed it by a fourth final at the2022 European Open in Antwerp defeatingDominic Thiem before losing to second seedFélix Auger-Aliassime.[35]

2023: Two ATP finals, top 25

Korda started his 2023 season at theAdelaide International 1. He reached his fifth ATP singles final by beating former world No. 1Andy Murray, world No. 21Roberto Bautista Agut, sixth seed and world No. 15,Jannik Sinner, andYoshihito Nishioka via retirement.[36][37][38][39] In the final, he lost to top seed and world No. 5,Novak Djokovic, in three sets despite having a championship point.[40] Seeded 29th at theAustralian Open, he stunned seventh seed, world No. 8, and two-time finalist,Daniil Medvedev, in the third round.[41][42][43] In the fourth round, he beat 10th seed and world No. 11,Hubert Hurkacz, to reach the quarterfinals of a Major for the first time in his career.[44] He retired during his quarterfinal match against 18th seed and world No. 20,Karen Khachanov, due to a right-wrist injury.[45] Due to his success at the Australian Open, his ranking improved from No. 31 to No. 26.

Korda's right-wrist injury kept him out of action for the next few months.[46][47] He returned to the tour during the week of April 24 at theMadrid Open. Seeded 22nd, he lost in the second round to French qualifierHugo Grenier.[48][49] Seeded 22nd at theItalian Open, he was defeated in the second round by qualifierRoman Safiullin.[50] He also lost in the second round at the2023 French Open to another qualifier, AustrianSebastian Ofner.

At the2023 Queen's Club Championships he reached the semifinals without dropping a set, defeatingDan Evans, fourth seedFrances Tiafoe and fifth seedCameron Norrie.[51]

Following this good run, he lost in the first round at the2023 Wimbledon Championships toJiří Veselý who was using protected ranking.

He also lost in the first round toMárton Fucsovics at theUS Open.Starting the Asian swing at the2023 Zhuhai Championships he defeatedAlexandre Müller and fifth seedTomás Martín Etcheverry to reach another semifinal.[52] The following week he reached his sixth final at the2023 Astana Open defeating wildcardHamad Medjedovic[53] before losing to sixth seedAdrian Mannarino.[54]At theShanghai Masters he defeated second seed Daniil Medvedev, his second win of the season against the Russian, and first top-5 and top-3 win of his career to reach the fourth round.[55][56] Next he defeated 20th seedFrancisco Cerúndolo to reach the quarterfinals.[57] He reached his first Masters semifinal defeating compatriotBen Shelton.[58]

2024: ATP 1000 doubles title, singles top 20

He recorded his 100th win at the2024 Open 13 Provence over qualifierHugo Grenier.[59] He lost to second seedGrigor Dimitrov in the second round.

At the2024 Mutua Madrid Open, Korda won themen's doubles title with AustralianJordan Thompson. It was Korda's first ATP level doubles title.[60][61]

At the beginning of the grass court season at the2024 Libéma Open in's-Hertogenbosch he reached his seventh final, becoming the first American in the championship match since 1996.[62] He lost to top seedAlex de Minaur in straight sets.[63][64]At the2024 Queen's Club Championships he defeatedKaren Khachanov, and third seed Grigor Dimitrov in three sets, to reach back-to-back grass court quarterfinals.[65] Following reaching the semifinals with a win over qualifierRinky Hijikata also in three sets, he reached the top 20 in the rankings. Korda and his father Petr became the first father/son duo to rank in the Top 20.[66]

Korda won his second ATP single title and the first 500 title at theWashington Open. Korda defeated 5th seedFrances Tiafoe in the semifinal and 7th seedJordan Thompson in the quarterfinals. In the final match, Korda beatFlavio Cobolli in three sets, to win the title 32 years after his fatherPetr Korda. They became the first father-son tandem to win the same ATP Tour event.[67]

Korda reached the semifinals of a Masters 1000 for the first time in his career, at the2024 National Bank Open, Canada, defeating wildcard entrant and local playerVasek Pospisil by retirement and upsetting ninth seedTaylor Fritz, sixth seedCasper Ruud with a walkover and second seedAlexander Zverev, his second career top 5 win. As a result he reached the top 15 in the rankings.[68][69][70]

2025: New ATP final, injury

Korda reached the final at the2025 Adelaide International, losing to fifth seedFélix Auger-Aliassime in three sets.[71][72]

Following a two-and-a-half-month recovery from a stress fracture in his right shin—and after dropping to world No. 86 and missingWimbledon, he returned in August at the2025 Winston-Salem Open where he made it to the semifinal but withdrew before the match due to illness.[73] The following week he retired early during his first round match against Cameron Norrie at the2025 US Open.[74]

Personal life

Korda started playing ice hockey as a kid, but decided to switch to tennis at the age of 9 after accompanying his father performance at the2009 US Open.[75]

Korda's family is also deeply involved ingolf; he has two siblings,Jessica andNelly Korda, who play at a professional level on theLPGA Tour. His older sister, Nelly, was a gold medalist onwomen's category at the2020 Summer Olympics.

At age 11, Sebastian won a golf junior tournament inPrague, Czech Republic, in which his sister Nelly also competed.[76]
