Sean Brian Gilder (born 1 March 1964) is an English stage, film and screen actor andplaywright.
Gilder was born inBrampton,Cumberland, England. He is best known for his portrayal of Styles onHornblower andPaddy Maguire onShameless from 2005 to 2010. He has appeared inDoctor Who (as theSycorax Leader) as well asNew Tricks,Gangs of New York,The Fall and the 2004 film,King Arthur. InMike Bassett: England Manager he was one of the journalists.[2] According toThe Sun newspaper, Gilder leftShameless after series 7 with the reason rumoured to be his bad relationship with actressTina Malone, who played his character's on screen wife,Mimi. More recently he appeared in a recurring role inApple TV+’sSlow Horses, based on thebook series byMick Herron.
In March 2008, Sean appeared as Paddy'sgay twin brother Noel inShameless, however in a trick to viewers, Noel was credited as being played by Neil Grades, ananagram of Sean Gilder.[citation needed] On 3 April 2008, he appeared onThe Paul O'Grady Show alongside fellowShameless starAlice Barry, who playedLillian Tyler.[3]
In January 2014, he was Bosola inThe Duchess of Malfi, playing oppositeGemma Arterton in the inaugural production at theSam Wanamaker Theatre.[4]
In June 2017, he appeared in the third series of theBBC dramaPoldark, as Tholly Tregirls.
Gilder appeared in the National Theatre production ofDear England in various roles in the England football team including Physio Phil, and managersSam Allardyce andFabio Capello.
Gilder attendedQueen Mary, University of London,[5] where he earned aBA (Hons) in Modern History and Third World Studies.[citation needed] He then trained at theWebber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art and entered the profession in 1987.[citation needed]
