Scout Motors Inc. is an Americanautomotive startup company. Founded in 2022, it is backed by German manufacturerVolkswagen Group and a member of the Volkswagen Group companies. Volkswagen AG obtained the Scout brand after acquiring American truck manufacturerInternational Motors (previously Navistar) in 2021.
Scout Motors was established to produceoff-road capableelectric vehicles.[1] It is a U.S.-based operation and independent company, managed separately fromVolkswagen AG with its own executive team and board members.[2][3] The company does not have an official headquarters, but has operations located in South Carolina, Michigan, Virginia, and California.
The Scout marque is named after the off-road vehicleInternational Scout, produced from 1961 to 1980. Volkswagen has owned the Scout trademark since 2020 through its American truck subsidiaryNavistar International.[4][5]
On May 11, 2022, Volkswagen AG announced the creation of a new brand, Scout, dedicated toelectric vehicles, designed, developed, manufactured and marketed in the United States.[6][7] Scott Keogh, CEO of Volkswagen USA, became the first CEO of Scout Motors.[8]
On October 24, 2024, Scout declared it will sell directly to customers and service vehicles itself, following the model adopted by competitorsTesla,Rivian andPolestar, rather than use the Volkswagen dealer network. TheNational Automobile Dealers Association responded that it would challenge this decision using legal and political means, and filed a lawsuit on February 3, 2025, alleging violations of state law.[9][10][11]
On March 3, 2023, Scout Motors announced plans to build a $2 billion factory capable of producing 200,000 EVs a year inBlythewood, South Carolina.[12] The factory will employ up to 4,000 people[13] and it will manufacture the Scout Motor's first two vehicles: a mid-size off-road focused SUV and a pickup truck that are scheduled to be launched in late 2027.[14]
Scout Motors' announced in December 2023 that it would open its first R&D facility sometime in 2024. Scout selectedNovi, Michigan as the site of the new facility. Scout Motors indicated that it expects to employ roughly 200 people once the R&D facility becomes operational.[15][16]
Scout Motors debuted two concepts on October 24, 2024, one of which is the Terra, a pickup truck, and the other is the Traveler, an SUV. They are expected to release in late 2027 as a 2028 model.[17] Reservations are currently available in the United States and Canada.[18]
