Scott Wise (born October 30, 1958) is an American theatre actor and dancer. He is known for his performances in the 1989 musicalJerome Robbins' Broadway, which earned him aTony Award, and in the 2002 filmChicago.

Wise was nominated for threeTony Awards (winning one), twoDrama Desk Awards, anOuter Critics Circle Award, and aHelen Hayes Award in his career.

Life and career

Wise was born inPocatello, Idaho, and grew up nearSpokane, Washington, living briefly inProvo, Utah.[1]

Although a life-trained dancer, Wise first became seriously interested in dance as a career while studying to become an accountant at the University of Idaho at Moscow.[2] He performed with theJoffrey II, then moved into musical theater in the early 1980s after auditioning forA Chorus Line "as a dare more than anything."[1]

Wise won theTony Award in 1989 in the category ofBest Featured Actor in a Musical for his performance in thedancerevueJerome Robbins' Broadway. In that revue, Wise played multiple roles, including "Riff" inWest Side Story and "Chip" inOn the Town. Wise was nominated twice more in thesame category for his performances inState Fair (1996)[3] andFosse (1999).[4][5]

In addition to playing the Drill Sergeant and Sergeant O'Leary in therockballet,Movin' Out (2002), Wise wasTwyla Tharp's assistant choreographer and assistant director.[6][7] Wise choreographed theOff-BroadwaymusicalA Class Act in 2000.[8] a regional production ofThe Who'sTommy and the national tour ofLeader of the Pack.[2]

Personal life

Wise is married to dancerElizabeth Parkinson, with whom he has a son.[9] His daughter, actressSavannah Wise, is from his first marriage, to dancer and choreographer Kiel Junius.[10]

In October 2006, Wise and Parkinson opened their studio, FineLine Theatre Arts, inNew Milford, Connecticut.[11]
