In February 2012, Pye returned to Australia and made the switch totouring cars, becoming the new driver ofTriple Eight Race Engineering's championship-winningMonster Energy/GearWrench backedHolden VE Commodore in the2012 V8 Supercar Development Series.[7] Pye finished the championship in second place behindScott McLaughlin.
In 2013, Pye graduated to theInternational V8 Supercars Championship. driving forLucas Dumbrell Motorsport in aHolden VF Commodore with sponsorship from Ekol andHog's Breath Cafe.[8] Pye endured a difficult season, including a heavy crash atSymmons Plains Raceway that caused him to miss thePukekohe round due to the lack of a spare car.[9]

After one season at Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport, Pye signed a two-year deal withDick Johnson Racing, driving aFord FG Falcon withWilson Security sponsorship for2014.[10] However, in September 2014,Team Penske bought a stake in the team and eventually elected to run only a single entry in2015 for two-time championMarcos Ambrose, in his return fromNASCAR.[11] Pye signed on asEnduro Cup team-mate to Ambrose at the renamed DJR Team Penske, but after mixed performances at theAdelaide 500 and the non-championshipSupercars Challenge, Ambrose stepped down from the seat, leaving Pye back in a full-time drive for the remainder of the season.
With the team signingFabian Coulthard for2016, Pye once again faced an uncertain future before the team elected to expand to two cars.[11] Following this confirmation, Pye went on to score his first championship podium at theITM 500 Auckland. In 2016, Pye scored two more podiums, atPhillip Island and another at Pukekohe on the way to a career-best top 15 championship result. Despite this, he was once again out of a drive for2017, with his formerDevelopment Series rival McLaughlin being signed for DJR Team Penske to join Coulthard.[12]

In September 2016, Pye was announced as the replacement forGarth Tander atWalkinshaw Racing for2017, the team's first season since losing theHolden Racing Team moniker.[13] In a difficult season for the team, Pye finished 12th in the standings, ahead of team-mateJames Courtney, with the highlight for Pye being a second place at the2017 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 driving withWarren Luff. Just as happened while Pye was at Dick Johnson Racing, the team was bought out by international interests during his first season at the team, withAndretti Autosport andUnited Autosports each taking part-ownership in the team which became known asWalkinshaw Andretti United.[11] Pye did retain his seat into2018 and took his first championship race win in dramatic circumstances at the second event, theMelbourne 400 on theAlbert Park Grand Prix Circuit. Pye had led the race comfortably until a late-race shower broughtJamie Whincup back into contention in the final laps.[14] On 7 October Pye, driving with Warren Luff, went back-to-back with second-place finishes at theSupercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 and later he finished 7th at Newcastle and in the points standings. On 6 November 2019 he announced he will be leavingWalkinshaw Andretti United.[15]
On 7 November 2019, Pye announced that he would be joiningTeam 18 for the 2020 season.[16]
