Scopus is a genus of wading birds containing thehamerkop(Scopus umbretta) and its extinctPliocene relative,Scopus xenopus. This genus is the sole representative of the familyScopidae.
Hamerkops were traditionally included in theCiconiiformes, but are now thought to be closer to thePelecaniformes.[1] Recent studies have found that its closest relatives are thepelicans andshoebill.[2]
