Schleithal (French pronunciation:[ʃlaital]) is acommune in theBas-Rhindepartment inGrand Est in north-easternFrance.[3] Located in the northernLower Rhine just steps from the French-German border. This boundary is defined by theLauter which gives its name to the small town ofLauterbourg located at the mouth of the riverRhine. Schleithal is alinear settlement.

History

The first writings of Schleithal date from 1145, but some believe that thevillage dates from 631 (year of establishment of the abbey ofWissembourg). The village becameFrench after the Treaty or otherwise known asPeace of Westphalia in 1648.
