Schkeuditz (German pronunciation: [ˈʃkɔʏdɪts] ⓘ ;Upper Sorbian :Skudźicy ) is aGroße Kreisstadt in the district ofNordsachsen , inSaxony ,Germany . It is situated on theWhite Elster river, 12km northwest ofLeipzig .Leipzig/Halle Airport is located in Schkeuditz. Theletter processing center for the greater Leipzig region is also located in Schkeuditz. "Schkeuditzer Kreuz", the firstcloverleaf exchange in Germany was opened in 1936,[ 3] and today is the intersection between the autobahnsA9 andA14 .
TheLinear Pottery Well excavated in the Schkeuditz locality of Altscherbitz is 7000 years old.[ 4] Schkeuditz was first documented in the year 981 as a church inMerseburg bishopric with the name "scudici".

In the northeastern part of Schkeuditz is theSchladitzer See . It is an artificial lake developed from a formeropencast lignite mine. The Schladitzer See has been used as abathing lake andwater sports center since 2003.[ 6]
