Schinopsis is agenus ofSouth Americantrees in the familyAnacardiaceae, also known by the common namesquebracho,quebracho colorado andred quebracho. In Brazil it is known asbaraúna orbraúna.
Thespecies within this genus inhabit different regions of theGran Chaco ecoregion including parts of northernArgentina,Bolivia, andParaguay.[1] In Brazil it can be found as a component of theCaatinga in the northwestern region.[2]
The name is in recognition of the hardness of thewood from theSpanishquiebra-hacha ("axe-breaker"). It also distinguishes the species from the "whitequebracho" trees of the unrelated genusAspidosperma.[3]
Schinopsis is the exclusive food plant of themothColeophora haywardi.
The timber is used in furniture and on railroads due to its durability.
Schinopsis is the sole host of the ancestralpowdery mildew speciesCaespitotheca forestalis, which is known fromSchinopsis balansae,Schinopsis haenkeana, andSchinopsis lorentzii.[4]
