Schiefling am Wörthersee (formerlySchiefling am See,Slovene:Škofiče) is amarket town in the district ofKlagenfurt-Land in theAustrian state ofCarinthia.
It is situated along the lowSattnitz mountain range between theWörthersee in the north and theDrava Valley in the south. The municipality of Schiefling also includes theKatastralgemeindenSt. Kathrein (Podjerberk) andTechelweg (Holbiče). According to a 2001 census, 5.8% of the population areSlovene-speaking.
Schiefling was first mentioned asSchüfling in a 1256 deed by theCarinthian Duke Ulrich III ofSpanheim. It is known for theKathreinkogel mountain, a prehistoric settlement area since theMesolithic and also the site of aRoman fort. During theDecline of the Roman Empire in the late 4th century the castle was turned into anEarly Christian church, named after SaintCatherine of Alexandria. Her attribute, thebreaking wheel is featured within Schiefling's coat of arms together with acrosier, as the Slovene nameŠkof means "bishop". The town was renamed toSchiefling am Wörthersee on 1 June 2010.[citation needed]
Within the village ofAuen (Log) the area of Schiefling reaches out to the southern shore of theWörthersee. From 1932 on the composerAlban Berg had a residence here (theWaldhaus), where he worked on his operaLulu and hisViolin Concerto. The industrialistFriedrich Karl Flick spent the years after his retirement in Auen.
