Scaphokogia is an extinctgenus ofpygmy sperm whales that lived off the coasts ofMexico andPeru,South America during theLate Miocene toLate Pliocene. Two species have currently been described: thetype speciesS. cochlearis andS. totajpe.[1] Fossils ofScaphokogia have been found in theTirabuzon Formation ofBaja California and thePisco Formation of Peru.[2]Scaphokogia existed about 5 million years ago, and were relatively rare animals.[3]
