TheScandelion Castle was built by theCrusaders in what is todaySouth Lebanon in 1116,[1] during the reign ofBaldwin I of Jerusalem. Other sources indicate that they took the town known in medieval Arabic asIskandarouna (Iskandaruna), called by the CrusadersScandelion[2][better source needed] orScandalion / Scandalium,[3] in 1124.[2] It became a strategic high ground, used to defendTyre.[2] The site is today at the Lebanese village ofShamaa.
