Scaër (French pronunciation:[skɛʁ];Breton:Skaer) is acommune in theFinistèredepartment ofBrittany in north-western France.

Inhabitants of Scaër are called in FrenchScaërois. Scaër's population peaked at 7,838 in 1946 and has since declined to 5,245 in 2020. This represents a 33% decrease in total population since the peak census figure.

Geography

Scaër, encompassing 11,758 hectares, is the most spread-out city inFinistère and the third inBrittany. Scaër is located 30.5 km (19.0 mi) east ofQuimper and 40 km (25 mi) northwest ofLorient. Historically, Scaër belongs toCornouaille.

Scaër is border byGuiscriff to the east, byLeuhan andRoudouallec to the north, byTourc'h to the west and byRosporden andBannalec to the south.

Breton language

The municipality launched a linguistic plan concerning theBreton language throughYa d'ar brezhoneg on 20 March 2007.

In 2008, 11.62% of primary-school children attended bilingual schools.[5]
