Savitri Bai Phule (born 1 January 1981) is an Indian politician and president of the Kanshiram Bahujan Samaj Party (KBSP).[1] She was elected to the state assembly in 2012 from Balha inBahraich district as a candidate ofBharatiya Janata Party. She contested 2014Lok Sabha election fromBahraich and became member of16th Lok Sabha.[2]

On 7 September 2015, Phule filed a complaint againstDilip Buildcon Limited company over caste remarks and threatening her with dire consequences.[3][4]

Personal life

Savitribai was born on 1 January 1981 in aBuddhist family atNanpara inBahraich district,Uttar Pradesh. She studied atDr. Ram Manohar Lohia Avadh University. She is influenced byBabasaheb Ambedkar andGautama Buddha. She followsBuddhism and wearssaffron cloths as asymbol of Buddhism.[5]

Political career

She was elected to the state assembly in 2012 from Balha inBahraich district as a candidate ofBharatiya Janata Party. She contested 2014Lok Sabha election fromBahraich and became member of16th Lok Sabha.[2][6]

She quit BJP on 6 December 2018 stating "Party Trying To Divide Society",[7] Her action comes after theUttar Pradesh Chief MinisterYogi Adityanath's comment onHanuman’s caste[8] and joinedIndian National Congress on 2 March 2019.[9]She contested2019 general elections from Bahraich parliamentary constituency as anIndian National Congress candidate. She got 34454 votes and lost the seat toAkshaibar Lal of Bhartiya Janta Party.[10]

In January 2020, Phule foundedKanshiram Bahujan Samaj Party (KBSP).[1]
