Satish Chandra Kaushik (13 April 1956 – 9 March 2023) was an Indian actor, director, producer,comedian , editor andscreenwriter . He found fame inBollywood withMr. India starringAnil Kapoor ,Sridevi , andAmrish Puri , where he played the iconic character of a cook named Calendar. He later directed films such asTere Naam .
Kaushik was born inKarol Bagh , Delhi on 13 April 1956 into a Gaur Brahmin family.[ 1] He graduated fromKirori Mal College ,Delhi University in 1972.[ 2] He was an alumnus ofNational School of Drama andFilm and Television Institute of India .[ 3]
As a film actor, he was noted for his roles as "Calendar" inMr. India ,[ 4] as Pappu Pager inDeewana Mastana , and as "Chanu Ahmed" in Sarah Gavron's British filmBrick Lane (2007). He won theFilmfare Best Comedian Award twice: in 1990 forRam Lakhan and in 1997 forSaajan Chale Sasural .[ 5]
As a theatre actor, his most noted role was that of "Willy Loman " in the Hindi-language play,Salesman Ramlal, an adaptation ofArthur Miller 'sDeath of a Salesman .[ 6] Kaushik wrote dialogues forKundan Shah 's comedy classicJaane Bhi Do Yaaron (1983).[ 7] His first film as a director was Anil Kapoor and Sridevi starrerRoop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja (1993). His second directorial wasPrem (1995), which was supposed to beTabu 's debut film. Both were box office disasters.[ 8] He continued to make films and got his first hit withHum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain in 1999.
He co-wrote and anchored a TV countdown show,Top Ten , for which he won the Screen Videocon Award.[ 9] In 2005, Kaushik directedArjun Rampal ,Amisha Patel , andZayed Khan inVaada .[ 10] In 2007 Kaushik, together withAnupam Kher , who had been his classmate atNSD , launched a new film company called Karol Bagh Productions.[ 11] Their first film,Teree Sang , was directed by Satish Kaushik.[ 12] StarringRuslaan Mumtaz andSheena Shahabadi , the film explores of teen pregnancy.[ 13]
His next work was to be based on the life ofTansen , in which the role of Tansen was to be played byAbhishek Bachchan , and the soundtrack was to be composed byRavindra Jain ; the script for the film remains unfinished.[ 14] Kaushik was working to promoteHaryana 's film industry, and was committed to making several films there.[ 15]
Chandigarh film city project [ edit ] Kaushik was a partner in theChandigarh film city project with real estate company Parsavnath Developers.[ 16] They bought a 30-acre (12 ha) plot in Sarangpur Village,Chandigarh t a very attractive pricing.[ 17] [ 18] [ 19]
Personal life and death [ edit ] Kaushik married Shashi in 1985.[ 20] Their son, Shanu, died in 1996 at age two.[ 21] In 2012, their daughter was born through asurrogate mother .[ 22]
Kaushik died of a heart attack inGurugram on 9 March 2023, at the age of 66.[ 23] [ 24] In his lastInstagram post, he was seen celebratingHoli 2023 at the house ofJaved Akhtar andShabana Azmi .[citation needed ]
