Highway 18 is an east–westprovincial highway in theCanadian province ofSaskatchewan. It runs fromHighway 13 nearRobsart, approximately 65 kilometres (40 mi) east of theAlberta border, to theManitoba border nearGainsborough, where it becomesManitoba Highway 3. It passes through three major communities, all in south-east Saskatchewan —Estevan,Oxbow, andCarnduff. It also passes north of the West and East Blocks ofGrasslands National Park. Highway 18 is about 712 kilometres (442 mi) long, which is the longest east–west highway and second longest highway in Saskatchewan.
The original segment of Highway 18 ran from the Manitoba border, through Estevan, toLake Alma, before turning north, passing throughRadville, and terminating at Highway 13 approximately 30 kilometres (19 mi) west ofWeyburn.[2] In the 1960s, Highway 18 was extended west toHighway 6 nearMinton along an upgraded grid road, resulting in the north–south section between Lake Alma and Highway 13 being renumbered asHighway 28.[3] In the 1970s, Highway 18 was again extended west along a series of upgraded grid roads and existing highways — former highways includeHighway 336 betweenCoronach andRockglen;Highway 319 betweenWood Mountain andHighway 19 nearMankota; andHighway 46 betweenHighway 4 nearOrkney andClaydon.[3][4]
The western terminus of Highway 18 begins south of theCypress Hills atHighway 13 and Robsart as agravel road. The highway heads south from there for 26 kilometres (16 mi) towards theOld Man on His Back Plateau and theCanada–United States border before beginning its eastward routing. Travelling east, Highway 18 rounds the southern slopes of Old Man on His Back Plateau and provides access toDivide,Old Man on His Back Prairie and Heritage Conservation Area,[5]Claydon,Loomis, andFrontier[6] as it heads toHighway 37 andClimax. From Claydon east, the highway ispaved.[7] It has a short 1.4-kilometre (0.87 mi) longconcurrency with the north–south 37 before resuming its eastward routing towardsVal Marie.[8] Communities along this stretch includeCanuck,Bracken,[9]Orkney, andMasefield. Leading up to Val Marie, Highway 18 shares a 15-kilometre (9.3 mi) long concurrency withHighway 4. Access to the West Block of theGrasslands National Park is about 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) south of Val Marie.

At Val Marie, Highway 18 leaves the concurrency with 4 and heads east through town along River Street and then crosses theFrenchman River. Several kilometres east of Val Marie, Highway 18 turns north and enters theWood Mountain Hills. Once in the hills, it turns east and follows the northern slopes towards the village ofWood Mountain. Communities along this stretch includeMankota,[10]Ferland,McCord,[11]Glentworth,[12] andFir Mountain.[13] East of McCord, the highway crosses Wood River. About one mile south of Wood Mountain, Highway 18 turns south where it once again enters the Wood Mountain Hills and passes byWood Mountain Regional Park andWood Mountain Provincial Park. It continues south out of the hills where it provides access to the East Block of Grasslands National Park and meetsHighway 2 a few kilometres north of the U.S. border. Highways 2 and 18 begin an eastward concurrency that continues toRockglen.[14] Communities along this segment includeKilldeer,Canopus, andQuantock. East of Canopus, the highway crosses thePoplar River. At Rockglen Highway 2 turns north while 18 continues east toHighway 36. Along this stretch, Highway 18 provides access toFife Lake[15] andRockin Beach Regional Park.[16]
At the junction with Highway 36, the two highways begin a 21-kilometre (13 mi) long concurrency that heads south-east towardsCoronach.[17] Highway 36 drops south to the U.S. border while 18 continues eastward pastBig Beaver[18] towards theBig Muddy Badlands andHighway 6. Highway 6 and 18 have a 9.7-kilometre (6.0 mi) long concurrency that heads north towardsMinton. Prior to Minton, 18 turns back east. It continues east en route toEstevan providing access to several communities includingGladmar,[19]Lake Alma,[20]Beaubier,[21]Ratcliffe,Oungre,[22]Torquay,[23] andOutram; intersectsHighways 28,707,35,606,350 and47; and crossesLong Creek andSouris River. On the south side of Estevan, Highway 18 meets Highway 47 and begins a short northward 1.4-kilometre (0.87 mi) long concurrency that goes into the city.[24] Near the centre of town, Highway 47 turns west concurrent with 4th Street and 18 turns east concurrent 4th Street. As 18 leaves Estevan, it opens up into a 10-kilometre (6.2 mi) long divided highway that runs concurrently withHighway 39A and thenHighway 39. About 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) east of Estevan, Highways 18 and 39 split off with 39 turning south-east toNorth Portal and the Canada–United States border and 18 continuing east towards the border with Manitoba.

Bienfait,[25] the first community on this section of highway, is about 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) east of Highway 18's junction with 39. The highway continues east from Bienfait and provides access to multiple communities, such asHirsch,Frobisher,[26]Oxbow,[27]Glen Ewen,[28]Carnduff,[29]Carievale,[30] andGainsborough;[31] intersects several highways, including605,604,9,603,601,318,8, and600; and crosses the rivers ofMoose Mountain Creek,Antler River, andGainsborough Creek. The eastern terminus, at only 2 miles east of Gainsborough, is at the border with Manitoba where it carries on asManitoba Highway 3.
