Saranac is atown inClinton County,New York, United States. The town is on the western border of the county, west ofPlattsburgh, and is within theAdirondack Park. The population was 3,852 at the2020 census,[3] down from 4,007 at the2010 census.[4] The town is named for theSaranac River that flows through the town.
The first settlement took placecirca 1802. The town of Saranac was established from the western part of the town ofPlattsburgh in 1824.[5]
According to theUnited States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 115.9 square miles (300.3 km2), of which 115.3 square miles (298.6 km2) is land and 0.66 square miles (1.7 km2), or 0.57%, is water.[4]
The western town line is the border ofFranklin County.
TheSaranac River is the principal waterway in the town, flowing through the southern and eastern sections of the town towardLake Champlain.
New York State Route 3 is the principal east–west highway through Saranac.

As of thecensus[7] of 2000, there were 4,165 people, 1,519 households, and 1,134 families residing in the town. The population density was 36.0 inhabitants per square mile (13.9/km2). There were 1,642 housing units at an average density of 14.2 per square mile (5.5/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 98.63%White, 0.14%African American, 0.34%Native American, 0.19%Asian, 0.05%Pacific Islander, 0.24% fromother races, and 0.41% from two or more races.Hispanic orLatino of any race were 1.03% of the population.
There were 1,519 households, out of which 39.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.1% weremarried couples living together, 9.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.3% were non-families. 19.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.74 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 28.6% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 30.8% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 11.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 96.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.8 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $45,761, and the median income for a family was $51,542. Males had a median income of $40,315 versus $28,750 for females. Theper capita income for the town was $18,242. About 6.4% of families and 9.8% of the population were below thepoverty line, including 11.1% of those under age 18 and 16.7% of those age 65 or over.
