Sarah Jane Hyland (born November 24, 1990) is an American actress. Born inManhattan, she attended theProfessional Performing Arts School before having minor roles in the filmsPrivate Parts (1997),Annie (1999) andBlind Date (2007). She is best known for playingHaley Dunphy in theABC sitcomModern Family (2009–2020), for which she received a nomination for theCritics' Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. From 2022 to 2023, Hyland hostedLove Island USA onPeacock.[1]
Hyland also had roles in the filmsGeek Charming (2011),Struck by Lightning (2012),Scary Movie 5 (2013),Vampire Academy (2014),See You in Valhalla (2015),XOXO (2016),Dirty Dancing (2017), andThe Wedding Year (2019). She's appeared onBroadway inGrey Gardens (2006–2007) andThe Great Gatsby (2025).
Hyland was born Sarah Jane Hyland inEast Village, New York[2] inManhattan,New York on November 24, 1990.[3][4][5] She is the daughter of actors Melissa Canaday and Edward James Hyland,[6][7] and the sister of actor Ian Hyland.[8]
Hyland attended theProfessional Performing Arts School in Manhattan.[9]
Hyland has been acting since her first role asHoward Stern's daughter in the filmPrivate Parts in 1997.[10] She went on to portray roles such as Molly in the 1999television film ofAnnie and Maddie Healy inLipstick Jungle onNBC. Hyland was featured in anOlive Garden commercial along with actressMolly Culver. She also appeared onBroadway as the youngJacqueline Bouvier inGrey Gardens (2006).[11]
From 2009 to 2020, Hyland playedHaley Dunphy on theABC sitcomModern Family, for which she and the rest of the show's cast won theScreen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series each year from 2011 through 2014.[12][13][14][15]
In 2011, Hyland co-starred in theDisney Channel Original MovieGeek Charming.[16] In 2012, Hyland appeared in the filmStruck by Lightning.[17][18] In September 2012, she was involved in aNintendo 3DS ad campaign[19] along withDianna Agron andGabby Douglas.[20][21]
Additionalmusical projects andtheatre productions Hyland hasperformed in are:Kerrigan-Lowdermilk Live (2013concert),Hair (2014adaptation at theHollywood Bowl),The Unauthorized Musical Parody ofScream (2014play at Rockwell Table & Stage) and The Kindred Foundation forAdoption created byJenna Ushkowitz andSamantha Futerman (2015fundraiser).[22][23][24]
In 2014 and 2018, Hyland was a co-host at theDisney Parks Christmas Day Parade (duringDisney Parks Frozen Christmas Celebration andThe Wonderful World of Disney: Magical Holiday Celebration), which included dancing and singing withJordan Fisher.[25][26][27][28][29] Hyland also made aguest appearance duringThe Wonderful World of Disney: Disneyland 60 (2016) andMickey's 90th Spectacular (2018).[30]
In 2016, Hylandcovered songs withBoyce Avenue such as "Closer" byThe Chainsmokers[31] and "Don't Wanna Know" byMaroon 5,[32] both included on the Boyce Avenue albumCover Sessions Vol. 4, which was released on December 19, 2017. "Don't Wanna Know" peaked at No. 62 on theBillboardCanadian Hot 100 chart in December 2016.[33]
In 2019, Hyland partnered withOlay for a skin product campaign.[34][35]
Hyland sang her debut performance of "Met At a Party" with Jordan McGraw (son ofDr. Phil) at the2019 Teen Choice Awards. The single was released on August 9, 2019, viaRepublic Records.[36][37][38]
In December 2020, Hyland appeared in aTaco Bell commercial called "The Craving" withJoe Keery.[39][40]
In October 2021, she became the newcreative director and co-founder of Sourse, a line of chocolate-infusedvitamins (including "Beauty Bites" and "Mood Bites").[41][42][43]
In August 2022, Hyland began hostingLove Island USA onPeacock.[1] In August 2022, she appeared onAmerica's Got Talent (alongsideSofía Vergara) during the first live Qualifier Results Show ofseason seventeen to assistseason sixteen winnerDustin Tavella with hismagic act.[44]
Hyland starred inPitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin, which premiered in November 2022 on Peacock.[45]
From May 28 to September 29, 2024, she played Audrey in theOff-Broadway revival ofLittle Shop of Horrors oppositeAndrew Barth Feldman as Seymour.[46] Hyland returned to Broadway on February 10, 2025, inThe Great Gatsby as Daisy oppositeRyan McCartan in the title role.[47] In October 2025, she is set to replaceGracie Lawrence inJust in Time as Connie Francis starring oppositeJonathan Groff.[48]
Hyland dated herGeek Charming co-starMatt Prokop for four years after meeting in 2010.[49][50][51] In August 2014, Hyland obtained adomestic violencetemporary restraining order against Prokop[52] for physically and verbally abusing her throughout the four years of their relationship.[53] In October of that same year, the restraining order became permanent.[54]
Hyland dated herShadowhunters andVampire Academy co-starDominic Sherwood from 2015 until 2017.[55][56]
In 2017, Hyland began a relationship withWells Adams, a radio personality and former contestant onThe Bachelorette andBachelor in Paradise.[57] The couple became engaged in July 2019,[58] and, in May 2020, they purchased a home inLos Angeles,[59] a month before their planned wedding date. However, theCOVID-19 pandemic caused them to postpone their wedding multiple times. An outdoor bridal shower in early June 2022 marked the end of their two-year delay,[60] and the couple were married at a Californiavineyard on August 20, 2022. Their wedding was attended by Hyland'sModern Family co-stars.[61][62][63]
Hyland was diagnosed withkidney dysplasia as a child and received akidney transplant from her father in April 2012. That kidney failed after a few years, leading to a second kidney transplant in September 2017, donated by her younger brother, Ian.[64] Hyland is on regular anti-rejection medicines and steroids to ensure that her body does not reject her donated kidney; consequently, Hyland has difficulty maintaining weight and muscle mass, and has been put on bed-rest several times, sometimes continuing to filmModern Family simultaneously.[65][66] Hyland has said that she does not recall shooting some episodes ofModern Family because she was so tired that she slept most of the time she was not shooting her scenes.[67]
In a December 2018Self magazine article, Hyland said she had contemplatedsuicide because she felt she was a burden on her family and blamed herself for her body rejecting her father's kidney. Since birth, she has undergone 16 surgeries to improve her health, including numerous kidney surgeries and alaparoscopic surgery to treat herendometriosis.[64]
