Sankalp Reddy (born October 20, 1984) is anIndian film director, and screenwriter who primarily works inTelugu cinema.[1] He made his directorial debut with thePan-Indian war filmGhazi (2017) which won theNational Film Award forBest Feature Film in Telugu. Reddy later directedscience fiction filmAntariksham 9000 KMPH (2018).

Early life

Sankalp Reddy was born and brought up inHyderabad. He graduated fromCVR College of Engineering and moved toAustralia for his MBA atGriffith University,Brisbane. He later dropped out after a semester and joinedGriffith Film School, a topcreative arts school in Australia, for pursuingMFA in film direction.[2][additional citation(s) needed]

Career

Reddy researched about submarines for a year and decided to make a film set in a submarine. Later, he wrote a book titledThe Blue Fish to own the copyrights to make a film. It later was the basis of his feature film debut withGhazi (2017).[3] The film is inspired by true events from theIndo-Pakistani war of 1971.[4][5]

The war film is an underwater tale of the courage and patriotism of the men aboard the Indian submarine,INS Karanj (S21), which destroyed the PakistaniPNS Ghazi when it ventured into Indian waters to destroyINS Vikrant on the shores of R. K. Beach inVisakhapatnam.[6][7]Ghazi was screened at theJagran Film Festival,[8] and garnered theNational Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu at the65th National Film Awards 2018.[9][10]

In 2018, Reddy directed the space thriller filmAntariksham 9000 KMPH, starringVarun Tej. Though it was praised for its attempt to introduce a new genre inTelugu cinema, it ended up as a commercial failure.[11][12] He then directedIB71, a 2023 IndianHindi-languagespy thriller film based on the1971 Indian Airlines hijacking.[13]
