Sanjay Nirupam (born 6 February 1965) is a Shiv Sena politician. He was a former member of the Indian Parliament from Indian National Congress party, and former President of theMumbai Regional Congress Committee.[2] Nirupam served two terms as anMP in theRajya Sabha first as a member of theShiv Sena and then as a member of theCongress Party.[3] He representedNorth MumbaiLok Sabha constituency from 2009 to 2014.[4][5]
Nirupam began his journalism career in 1986. In 1993, he became chief editor ofSaamana, at the time owned by the founder ofShiv Sena,Bal Thackeray. He then became an MP for Shiv Sena in 1996.[6]
He was a member of Parliamentary Committees such as thePublic Accounts Committee (PAC) and Finance Committee.[citation needed] He opened the 2013–14 budget debate for Congress Party in Parliament. He was Secretary of theAICC and was also Secretary-in-Charge of the state ofBihar.[citation needed] He is one of the National spokespersons of the Congress Party to express the Party's view on different issues on TV Channels. Sanjay Nirupam lost toBJP candidate Gopal Shetty in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.[citation needed] He was appointed President ofMumbai Regional Congress Committee in 2015. He was a contestant inBigg Boss in 2008.[citation needed]
After another poor showing at the polls, this time in the BMC elections in 2017, Nirupam tendered his resignation as the head of the Congress Party for Mumbai.[7]
On 4th April 2024, he was suspended for 6 years by theIndian National Congress for Party Indiscipline. Later the same day, he resigned fromIndian National Congress.[8]
