Sanjay Malhotra (born 14 February 1968) is an Indianbureaucrat andIAS officer who is serving as the current and 26thGovernor of theReserve Bank of India since 11 December 2024.[3][4] He is anIAS Officer of the 1990 BatchRajasthan Cadre, and has served in various positions throughout his career.[5][6]
Malhotra was born inBikaner,Rajasthan and completed his schooling fromKendriya Vidyalaya of Bikaner . He graduated with aBachelor of Technology incomputer science from theIndian Institute of Technology, Kanpur.[7] He then completed hisMaster's degree inPublic policy from thePrinceton University, United States.[7] His father was an officer in theBorder Security Force (BSF).
Malhotra's career in theIndian government'sbureaucracy began in 2000, when was appointed asPrivate Secretary to aUnion Minister. Before his appointment as Private Secretary, he served in various departments in Rajasthan.[6] From 2003 to 2020, Malhotra worked in theRajasthan government's departments of mines and minerals, information and broadcasting, finance, energy, and commercial taxation.[6] Between 2003 and 2020, in an international posting, Malhotra was a project coordinator in theUnited Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), where he held the rank of Deputy Secretary.[8] From 2000 to 2003, Malhotra was Personal Secretary to theMinister of State forSpace and theMinister of State for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.[8] In 2020, he was appointed as theAdditional Secretary in theMinistry of Power and he also served as thechairman andmanaging director of theRural Electrification Corporation.[6][9]
In February 2022, he was appointed Secretary of Financial Services in theMinistry of Finance and during his time in the position, he launched theinitial public offering of theLife Insurance Corporation and was also a member of the board of theReserve Bank of India (RBI).[6][10] Malhotra was appointed Revenue Secretary in December 2022, and he implemented a new income tax regime during his time in the position.[6][10] On 11 December 2024, Malhotra was appointedGovernor of the RBI.[11]
