San Martino is aRenaissanceRoman Catholic church in thesestiere ofCastello ofVenice, northernItaly.
The church now stands near theArsenale, and is officiated by a military chaplain. Initially founded in the 10th century, from 1546 to 1610 it was rebuilt based on a plan byJacopo Sansovino.
The facade (1897) was designed by Federico Berchet andDomenico Rupolo. The vault is frescoed withSaint Martin in Glory byJacopo Guarana, with thequadratura painted byDomenico Bruni. The walls portray saints and evangelists by Matteo Zais. A funeral monument (1633) to DogeFrancesco Erizzo was completed by Matteo Carneri. A chapel has a fresco cycle of theGlory of the Eucharist flanked bySacrifice of Isaac andSacrifice ofMechizedek on the walls byFabio Canal. The 15th-century altar byTullio Lombardo was brought here from the church of Santo Sepolcro. The sacristy is frescoed with aLast Supper (1549) andResurrection byGirolamo da Santacroce. The church has aRisen Christ altarpiece by Santacroce. The sacristy ceiling is frescoed byAntonio Zanchi andDomenico Bruni.
The organ was constructed by Pietro Nachini and restored by Gaetano Callido. The first altar on the right has aSt Cecilia and St Lorenzo Giustiniani byGiovanni Segala.
The church contains the funereal monument ofDogeFrancesco Erizzo designed by Mattia Carnero in 1633. The next altar towards the presbytery contains the canvas ofHoly Family with St Mark and Bishop Foca by Giovanni Laudis. The third altar has aMadonna in Sorrow byPalma il Giovane, next toThree angels with symbols of the passion and aDeposition by the same painter.
Thepulpit was carved by Sebastiano Messenali (1752), and the small altar byTullio Lombardo. There are also aSt John the Evangelist writes the Apocalyptic Gospels byMatteo Ponzone.
