San Martín is adepartment located in the centre ofMendoza Province inArgentina.
The provincial subdivision has a population of about 108,500 inhabitants in an area of 1,504 km2 (581 sq mi), and its capital city isSan Martín, which is located around 1,100 km (680 mi) from theCapital federal.
The department and itscabecera (capital) are named in honour ofGeneral San Martín (1778–1850), the military leader that led the Argentine forces to victory over theSpanish Empire during theArgentine War of Independence.
The city of San Martín is home toAtlético Club San Martín, afootball club currently playing in the regionalised4th Division.
