On December 28, 1981[ 3] [ 5] it was designated a Seattle landmark, and on April 12, 1982 it was listed in theNational Register of Historic Places .[ 6] [ 7]
The building was built in 1909–1910 byJohn Charles Olmsted and the architecture firmBebb & Mendel for liquor magnate Samuel Hyde.[ 8] [ 6] The two-story brick house is fronted by aportico withCorinthian columns ;[ 3] there is a brickcarriage house in back. The grounds were laid out by theOlmsted Brothers .[ 8] The Olmsteds played a prominent role in designing Seattle's system of parks and boulevards, and were responsible for landscaping the grounds of the 1909Alaska–Yukon–Pacific Exposition on the campus of theUniversity of Washington .[ 3] [ 6]
The house was sold by Hyde six years after completion so he could focus his attention on his coal industry investments.[ 9] Prior to 1994 the house would go thru numerous owners.[ 9]
